Keep Warm, Stay Safe
Baby, It’s Cold Outside!
As temperatures drop, space heaters are a smart option to warm up rooms or living spaces, without having to jack up the thermostat on your central heating. Space heaters are also useful to keep everyone comfortable: the main temps can be kept reasonable and space heaters can be used by those who are particularly chilly. And while space heaters are great for keeping costs down and individuals warm, space heaters account for 32% of house fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Keep your family safe this winter with our five tips for space heater safety.
1. Connect It
Space heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet and should be the only appliance plugged into that outlet. Never use an extension cord with a space heater, as it could cause overheating of the appliance.
2. Safety Features
Auto shutoff can literally be a lifesaver. If your space heater accidently falls over, it should shut off automatically. If your existing space heater doesn’t have this special feature, it’s time to upgrade to a new one.
3. Choose Wisely
Consider what your space heater is made of. Metal grating, for example, can get hot to the touch and burn if you get too close. Make sure the heater itself is cool to the touch and that the coils are guarded, in case anyone gets just a little too close.
4. Consider Placement
The safest place to position your space heater is on a level floor on a nonflammable surface. Ensure that the space heater is upright and balanced so that it doesn’t fall over. Also, be mindful that cord is not through a high traffic area, to avoid tripping over it. Most importantly, remember the 3-foot rule: space heaters should be placed 3 feet away from flammable material, such as curtains or upholstered furniture. Be mindful of pets and children when space heaters are in use.
5. In Use
Never leave your space heater unattended. If you’re not in the room with the space heater, turn it off. If you are leaving your home, turn off the space heater.
