Frequently Asked Questions
Your appliance is broken. Now What?
With over 30 years in the business and having repaired hundreds of appliances, Appliance Doctor has encountered just about every appliance problem. Below are just some of the more common questions we get asked. If your specific issue isn’t addressed, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help. We’ll gladly answer as many questions as we can over the phone or schedule an Appliance Expert to come out and give you an assessment of your appliance’s condition.
An average laundry load should take about 45 minutes. If you’re experiencing loads taking more than an hour to dry, you may have a problem. Check the vents for blockage. If the dryer is blowing cool air, it could require a new heating element.
You may be using too much detergent. Concentrated detergents can be used at much lower measures. Check the detergent packaging for the proper amount per load. Also, if your home has a water softener, even less detergent will be required.
No, doing so ruins the interior and the ability to self-clean. Not to mention the residue left behind. Use the self-clean function on your oven to clean the interior.
Not two days before you plan to cook a big holiday meal! Murphy’s Law guarantees that is when your heating element will give out.
Run your self-clean cycle overnight so it doesn’t compete with other appliances during daytime use.
We always do our best to provide you with as much information over the phone as possible. While it is sometimes possible to provide a cost range for a repair, without actually assessing your particular situation, we cannot give an exact quote without first inspecting the appliance.

We strongly recommend using HE detergents in High Efficiency Front Load Washers. The cleaning action of a front load washer is not the same as a top load. In a front load washer, clothes are lifted and dropped back into the water. When using standard laundry detergent, this action “whips” air into the detergent, it becomes trapped, and creates over-sudsing. HE detergents are designed for front load washers to prevent this.
If your appliance is still under warranty, definitely have it repaired.
How well it’s been maintained and how many years you’ve had it will determine whether you should repair or replace your appliance.
Just about every home appliance has a projected lifespan (see our page, Appliance Life Guide.) If your appliance is at the tail end of it’s life cycle, or if you have already exceeded the average amount of years, it may be time to consider replacing. If, however, your appliance is fairly new, repairing it will save you money.
Regular appliance maintenance is the best way to ensure both that your appliances continue to work properly and efficiently and to get many good years out of it.
